Solar Roof Tax Credit on Family Property

I am planning on installing a solar roof on my parent's property. I am not the owner of the house, but it is my primary residence. My parent's own the property, but they do not live there.

  • If I pay for the solar roof, can I claim the Federal tax credit even though I do not own the property?
  • If they pay for the solar roof, can they claim the tax credit even if it isn't their primary residence? They do not reside in the same state as the property.

Solar Roof Tax Credit on Family Property

If the residence is your Main Home, your main home is generally the home where you live most of the time, then you are eligible for the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit for the solar panels that you have installed and paid for on your Main Home.
