So I’m married filing separate and my spouse got the child tax credit payments. How do I put that in so I’m not over paid ?

You are filing a tax return separate from your spouse, and you received no Advance Child Tax Credit payments, so report $0 received.

Your spouse is filing a separate tax return, so report the Advance Child Tax Credit payments reported on the spouse's IRS Letter 6419.

Report the Advance Child Tax Credit payments received under Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks / Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits at the screen Tell us about any Advance Child Tax Credit payments.

  • In box 1 report the amount of the advance payments.
  • In box 2 report the number of qualifying children listed on your IRS Letter 6419, not the number of qualifying children you are reporting on your 2021 Federal 1040 tax return.

So I did type 0 but it’s trying to give me the 10,800 dollars . I just don’t want to be overpaid or paid for twice

Are you claiming the kids this year?  Did your spouse claim them last year?  If so, this is a loophole that was created that causes basically a legal overpayment for some taxpayers of the child tax credit.  Depending on your spouses income, they may or may not have to repay some or all of the credit they received.
