It depends and it is possible.  If you have a portion of the credit that is creating a zero tax liability, then any remaining could be added as a payment/refundable portion.

 

Check your Form 1040, line 19 and line 28 to see the full child tax credit. If you have an amount on both lines you have a refundable portion.

The refundable "additional child tax credit" appears on line 28.    The child tax credit on line 19 is used first to reduce any tax you owe.   The remaining amount can go to line 28 as the ACTC.   The maximum amount ACTC is $1700 per child---but the amount is based on how much you earned by working, so may be less.

 

 

Look at your 2024 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received
