Should I go to all the trouble of detailing itemized deductions if it's apparent that they won't equal the standard deduction? And, how does the system deal with this?

There is absolutely no requirement for you to enter your itemized deductions. If you know the standard deduction is better, then you can take it. However, in terms of the system, if information has carried year over year, you may get an error for not having a form filled all the way out. You can try to delete the form or you can just enter the information.
