It depends.  It is true that donations to non-profit organizations can be reported on your taxes.  They are reported on Schedule A of your tax return but are only deductible if you itemize deductions.  

If your standard deduction is higher than your itemized deduction total, then it will be more beneficial for your tax scenario to take the standard deduction.
