You have a couple ways to solve this.

1. I would start with the dealership. Tell them that IRS Revenue Procedure 2022-42 states they are required to provide you with a copy of the successfully submitted seller report.

Explain that you  tax return is being rejected because the VIN has not been registered in the IRS ECO portal. Ask them to please log into their IRS Energy Credits Online account and confirm the 'Report Status' says Accepted or Return Processed.

2. If you are positive the VIN is correct, follow these steps:

  1. select fix my return
  2. Edit/Update Form 8936
  3. While you are there, double check your date placed in service exactly matches the day the dealer listed.
  4. Look for confirm VIN or substantiate VIN is entered correctly. This allows the return to bypass the system and go to a human or secondary database- I am not sure how the IRS works. I just know it might get your return filed. If not, paper filing will be the next step.

Schedule A Form 8936, VIN does not match e-file database. My VIN matches and dealership is claiming they submitted clean vehicle seller report with no documentation. Help

Hello............I am having a similar issue.  I'm getting a message on form 8936 that my VIN matches the VIN of another vehicle.  I have verified the VIN numerous times and it is correct.  I also called TESLA and they stated it is correct and they had submitted all paperwork  What do I do to fix this.  I do see a box to check that I certify VIN is correct, but when doing that, I get an error message saying not to do it unless return was rejected.  Please advise.

If you have already submitted your return and had it rejected then you can check the box certifying that the VIN is correct and resubmit it.  The only other option is to print it and file it by mailing the tax return in.

Either of these options is going to result in a delay to processing your tax return.  So be prepared for a wait.

Fixed the problem. For some reason Turbo Tax created a 2nd form so it appeared I had 2 vehicles.   I deleted the 2nd form and the VIN was accepted.

What should be the status of the Clean Vehicle Seller Report so that VIN can be found in the IRS database.

My report status is Accepted and getting rejected.

The rejections happen due to the IRS rules when either:

  •  VIN is incorrect (Rejection code F8936-030-01)
  •  Your tax ID and VIN do not match in the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-046)
  •  The credit type claimed and the amount entered on the Schedule A of Form 8936 is not matching the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-0047)
  •  The purchase date is inconsistent with the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-048).

Please follow these steps:

  1. Check the report that you received from the dealer and make sure it is correct and matches what you have entered on your tax return.  Dealers who sell vehicles eligible for a used (previously owned) vehicle credit under IRC 25E must f...
  2. Contact the dealer and make sure that they provided the correct information to the IRS and/or that they did provide the sale information to the IRS.
  3. If you can prove that number 1 and 2 are true and the IRS still rejects your tax return, you will have to print and mail the return. You will also need to send proof that proves you got the credit.
