Why is the dollar amount on line 17 of Schedule A, different than line 12 on form 1040, when line 12 on form 1040 is pulling from Schedule A?
Thanks!

Is Line 17 on the Schedule A greater than the Standard Deduction for your filing status?
Standard deductions for 2024
Single - $14,600 add $1,950 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $14,600 add $1,550 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $29,200 add $1,550 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $21,900 add $1,950 if age 65 or older
Yes....Married filing jointly....Total itemized deductions on Schedule A (line 17) is $38,316. Line 12 on Form 1040 is showing $41,700.
Interestingly, when I finished, the program said the standard deduction would be used.
I think I figured this out....I have a "Net Qualified Disaster Loss," and without that loss, my itemized deductions were below the Standard Deduction. It seems it gave me the Standard Deduction, and then added the Net Qualified Disaster Loss to the Standard Deduction to arrive at the amount entered on my 1040.
Is that properly calculated?
Yes. You can claim the disaster loss even if you take the standard deduction as long as it is from a qualified disaster.
Thank you!
