When you select "major items" for sales tax deduction, the software lets you enter these but then does not provide the sales tax from the IRS table. The total sales tax deduction (as per the IRS guidelines) should be the total for major items PLUS the figure from the IRS table for your location (zip code).

After you enter the sales tax on a major item you get a screen with the heading "Major purchases results." The last line of that screen says "Deduction allowed" and shows the total amount of the sales tax on the major item. But the wording is confusing. The amount it shows as "Deduction allowed" is not your total deduction. It's only the amount allowed for that major item. The total deduction for state sales tax on Schedule A line 5a in your tax return does include the amount from the IRS table in addition to the tax on the major item.
there is an error in turbotax softare.
I am getting this same issue.
I have confirmed that the deduction amount is allowable (by using the option: Enter actual sales tax paid (Requires receipts to support your total. )
I have confirmed that the taxes I enter on the total pretax amount is equal to my local tax rate of 10.35%.
BUT turbotax zeros this tax on major purchase because "it was calculated using a rate that does not match the general rate for your location (0.1035)." Laughably (except not so funny) it gets the tax rate correct, but the conclusion is wrong.
Help! I would like to file my taxes and this error needs to be corrected.
