Residential Energy Credit

We paid 13,800 for a qualifying heat pump system (eligible for a home residential clean energy credit) in 2024, applied the correct data within our purchased 2024 Turbotax online software, and received a $0 credit availability.  Why?

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

I received an email from MindyB stating I need to include a Token code with my response (forwarding an agent a copy of the return).  No Token code was posted.

@DM7777 you can reply in this thread with the token that you generate in TurboTax by following the steps.  If you tried to post the token, but it was blocked because the filter thought it was a phone number, you can add a space between the numbers.

Here are the steps to obtain a token you can provide to us:

Token 1293651 was the first agent request issued

Token 1293660 was the second request

I'm still receiving a $0 credit notification, please advise how this may be resolved.  Secondly, we completed the energy equipment in early 2024 and it has been completed and operating since February, 2024.  Do we have an ability to utilize the tax credit for the 2024 return?

@DM7777 Thank you.  I have reviewed your tax return.  The energy credit is non-refundable.  That means, if you do not have any income tax, you will not be able to use the credit to obtain a refund.  There is no income tax liability on your tax  return.  There is only self-employment tax, which is Medicare and Social Security tax, not income tax.

Here is some information you may find helpful: What Is the Difference Between a Refundable and a Nonrefundable Credit?
