Why is my dependent not listed in the drop-down box for the Dependent Care Credit?

I am trying to add my dependent's daycare information, but the dependent is not in the drop-down list under "Whose care did you pay for?". Why?

Have you entered your income for work on the tax return?  If married and filing jointly have you entered the spouse's income from work on the tax return?

Yes.  No spouse.  Child's mother and I split childcare costs.

Is the child under the age of 13?

Has the child been added as a dependent on your tax return in the My Info section of the program?  Go back to My Info and check to see that the child is a dependent.

Yes.  Child is toddler.  And listed as a dependent.

Why is my dependent not listed in the drop-down box for the Dependent Care Credit?

Hmmm...On the screen that shows the options to select that you were a Full Time Student or Disabled or None of the Above, did you check None of the Above?

Yes.  None of the Above was selected.

Then something else is going on here.  I just did a test return with dependent children and on the screen Whose care did you pay for? the dropdown has me, spouse and two dependents listed.

You can either go back to My Info and delete the dependent and then re-enter to see if that fixes the problem.

Or clear the tax return and start over.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen

Click on Clear & Start Over

I am having the same problem where one of my dependents is not listed as an available option.  Seems like an update needs to be pushed out by TurboTax.

Why is my dependent not listed in the drop-down box for the Dependent Care Credit?

Is it possible that the missing dependent was over 13 (as of December 31, 2025)? If so, then this dependent will not appear in the interview for form 2441 (including the drop-down box).

A child must be 13 and under to qualify as part of the Child and Dependent Care Credit calculation(s) on form 2441.

I should clarify, "must be 13 and under" refers to dependents who are 12 and under as well as to dependents who turned 13 during the tax year. As the instructions for form 2441 state, "A qualifying child under age 13 whom you can claim as a dependent. If the child turned 13 during the year, the child is a qualifying person for the part of the year they were under age 13."

Such a dependent who turned 13 during the tax year would generally be described as "13", but, even so, they could be eligible to be listed as a dependent on the 2441.

Please review the instructions for form 2441 here.

Why is my dependent not listed in the drop-down box for the Dependent Care Credit?

I am having the same problem, I am filing jointly with my husband for the first time. Before that I was able to claim my mother as my dependent when I was filing as head of household for 4 years and now it's not letting me. My mother has no earning and she got marketplace insurance through me and my husband's income so we have to have to claim her otherwise we will be asked to pay the tax credit back if her info is missing. What is going on turbotax?? I guess they want us to go to the competitors.

And one of the experts couldn't see my screen for literally entire 30 minutes after accepting it. Then I got connected to another agent who immediately said oh u cannot claim her, she has to do her own taxes without checking or asking if she even earns or have I ever claimed her before then when I told him. He couldn't decipher what is going on. I had to offer my own solutions like deleting forms, and redoing deleting entire wages and starting over still no resolution. This needs IT involvement or I'm going to someone else.

@Arhama If your mother's only income was Social Security and you provided over half her support you should be able to claim her as a qualifying relative dependent to get the $500 credit for other dependents and also as a qualifying dependent for Head of Household filing status if you are single.

I wonder if you answered something incorrectly in MY INFO.  Click her name in MY INFO on your return and go through the questions again---very slowly and carefully.  Read each screen top to bottom.   Watch how you answer the one about whether her SSN is valid for employment.   And be very careful when it asks if she paid for over half her own support.  Say NO.   It is not asking if you paid her support.  It is a weird question that trips people up sometimes.

IRS interview to help determine who can be claimed:

https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5200 in 2025 (not counting Social Security)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

Not sure why you chose this particular thread which began with a user who was asking about the dependent care credit.  That is a credit available if you pay someone to take care of your dependent while you work.
