If these are qualified medical expenses as explained above, you may take the deduction. To enter these expenses, follow these steps:
- From the Federal menu, click on Deductions & Credits
- Expand the menu for Medical
- Click Start/Revisit next to Medical Expenses
- Enter the information on the screens that follow
Keep in mind, medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of AGI are deductible as itemize deductions. They will only affect your return if your total deductions exceed the standard deduction for your filing status. In addition to the medical expenses, itemized deductions include mortgage interest, state and local taxes including real estate taxes (capped at $10,000), and charitable contributions.
