Unemployment tax relief

I had my taxes taken out of my weekly unemployment checks last year and was wondering why I wouldn’t receive money back from the $10,200 tax relief.  Being that I still paid taxes on that money, shouldn’t I get those paid taxes back too? I’ve tried researching  for this information online, but I haven’t found ANYTHING about this.

Thanks, Ashley Childress.

The IRS controls when the tax refund for the unemployment compensation exclusion is distributed.  The IRS sends the refunds in batches to those that are eligible starting in May and throughout the summer months.

Review your original return ... did you already get all your withholdings back in the original refund ?    If so there is nothing more for you to get.

Thank you for replying.  I figured it had something to do with that and I will check.  I don’t understand if they give you your taxes that you paid back, why did they make the other people pay them with their return? Wouldn’t it have canceled the payment out if they were just doing to get them back with the return anyway?  I feel like people who didn’t have it taken out weekly ended up paying it all in a lump sum when they filed their taxes. Now they are getting most of that money back only because of the relief bill they passed. Why wasn’t it taken out and paid back all at once when the filed their taxes? I’m sorry I’m probably confusing you, because I’m definitely confusing myself and it’s hard to explain what I am saying through text.
