Tax Extension Credit, Federal vs State

I used IRS Direct Pay to file an extension for my federal taxes owed, overpaid by a decent sum.

But I think I mistakenly thought that this covered ANY taxes owed, and that it was inclusive of any state taxes owed as well.  Does IRS Direct Pay only cover the extension payment for federal and I needed to pay the estimated (NJ) state taxes owed via another site?

And if so, I'd assume this is then considered a late payment despite overpaying on IRS Direct Pay (and incurring the penalty charges)

Thank you all in advance

Sorry IRS is only Federal.  You needed to pay State separately.  Yes you owe state and late penalties if any.

Did you enter the federal extension payment?

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

The IRS payment website for Direct Pay is Only for payment of federal taxes.

For a New Jersey state tax payment you would have needed to use the New Jersey Division of Taxation website  - https://www1.state.nj.us/TYTR_RevTaxPortal/jsp/IndTaxLoginJsp.jsp
