I recently was hired as a Law Enforcement Officer and foresee thousands of dollars in expenses for equipment, materials and services that are required to perform my job. I also would have thousands of miles on my personal vehicle (I don't get a police car to take home) for required training. These expenses would not be paid for or reimbursed by my employer. Am I understanding correctly that under the TCJA I am not eligible to deduct any of these expenses, and therefore I should not track receipts/mileage? Or should I still track them for use in determining AGI (I saw it suggested somewhere)? Or am I completely off base?

You are correct that those expenses are not deductible on your federal for an employee. However they might be deductible on your state return if you itemize.

Unfortunately, (well only in this case, fortunately in EVERY other way) I live in Texas. No tax returns.
