My itemized deduction ($19k) is lower than my standard deduction ($24k) however TT is indicating that I will pay lower taxes with itemized deductions. Why is this?

One possible reason why TurboTax is saying you'll pay less taxes if you claim the lower itemized deduction amount versus the standard deduction is because some states use the same deduction you took on the federal return.

It's possible that your combined federal and state taxes are less if you use the itemized deduction amount versus using the standard deduction.

  • There are 12 states and Washington, D.C., that will allow you to itemize on your state tax return only if you itemize on your federal.

  • Those 12 are Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.
