My dependant wasn’t accepted

I have four kids. My baby born in 2020 wasn’t accepted for the EIC. Also didn’t receive any child tax credits at all. The IRS cut us 9000 short. Can someone explain?

You cannot get EIC for more than three children even if you have a fourth  (or more) child.   The limit is three.

As for the child tax credit----we do not know why you did not receive it.   If you entered the children correctly as dependents on your 2021 tax return you should be getting CTC for all four children.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. If your child was born in 2021make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.   Make sure you did not say their Social Security numbers were not valid for employment.  That will mess it up.

EIC is on line 27a of your Form 1040

The child tax credit should be on line 28 of your Form 1040.

One thing----you can get the child tax credit for children UNDER the age of 18.   If any of them were older than 18 at the end of 2021 you cannot get the child tax credit for them.

The Earned Income Credit remains the same for three or more children, so the fourth child would not impact the amount of credit received. If you did not receive any advanced child tax credit payments, you will be able to claim them all on your 2021 tax return. To add that to your tax return:

  1. In your TurboTax return search for Child Tax Credit and Continue.
  2. Answer the question on the Let's start with where you spent the most time in 2021 screen and Continue.
  3. On the Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments screen, answer Yes, enter the amount from your letter in the Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments box, and Continue. If you did not receive any advance payments at all, answer No.
    1. If your spouse also received payments, be sure to enter that amount as well as a combined total for both of you.
  4. Answer the questions on the following screens, confirm your amount on the Let's recheck your advance Child Tax Credit payments screen, and Continue.

The IRS compares the amount of advanced credit you report to the amount they have on file. If the amounts do not agree, it can cause delays and reductions in your refund. If you are unsure of how much you received, the IRS should have sent Letter 6419 which tells you the amount they sent. You can also get this information on the IRS website.

To verify you are receiving both the Earned Income Credit and the child tax credit, you can preview your 1040:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then view your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu
  4. Scroll down until you see Form 1040 Line 27a Earned Income Credit and Line 28 Refundable child tax credit.
