Foreign tax credit

Vanguard does not subdivide foreign source income into qualified dividends and long term capital gains.  What is the best way to answer the worksheet question about portions of foreign source income attributable to qualified dividends and long term capital gains?

Long term capital gains are displayed in the 1099-DIV. box 2a.  In most cases the payer does not explicitly state the amount that is foreign sourced.  Thus all you have left is foreign sourced dividends.

Actually the supplemental forms that accompany the 1099 DIV will have information about what amount(s) are foreign sourced qualified dividends and/or capital gains.  The amount may be expressed in actual amounts or as a percentage of the amounts reported on the 1099 DIV.
