My oldest child is trying to claim independent status after I’ve already claimed then as a dependent. They lived with me for over half of of 2020, they also didn’t turn 18 until July. They didn’t start working until August. Help! Their CPA is encouraging them to pursue this.

According to the IRS, you should be able to claim your oldest child as a dependent. Here is an article about a qualifying child. They were under 19, lived with you for more than half of the year and probably did not pay more than half of their support.
If your return has already been accepted by the IRS, they will not be able to e-file and claim themselves. They will have to file a paper return in order to file independently.
The IRS will investigate after they receive the return if a paper one is filed and make a final determination.

Thank you,
The CPA refiled my son as independent again, though I still feel that this is in error.
