No that was just a gift to them. Do you claim him as a dependent on your tax return?

No, a charitable contribution must be made to an organization that is recognized as a charity by the IRS; it cannot be made to an individual.
No, as Volvogirl said, this is simple a gift from you to your friend. You get no deduction but your friend does not have to declare it as income.
