Do not enter the 1099-NEC directly. If you enter it directly, TurboTax may assign the entire income to one spouse. You must manually enter the income from each spouse on a separate Schedule C.

To allocate the income in TurboTax for a QJV follow these steps:

  1. In TurboTax, go to the Wages & Income Section and click on Self-Employment.
  2. In Self-Employment, click Start and continue through the interview.
  3. Click Looks Good.
  4. In the "Let's enter your income for your work" screen, select Other Self-Employed Income and click Continue.
  5. Enter the amount of income allocated to the first spouse.
  6. Repeat Steps 1 to 5 for the second spouse

Yes, the business income must be divided according to the ownership structure. Utilizing the previously outlined steps to enter the total business income will correctly account for all Form 1099-NEC earnings on the return, which will successfully prevent a reconciling issue with the IRS.

Thank you for your replay Cesar!

Follow up question:

Do I split each 1099-NEC equally for each spouse? The 1099's are only in my name and the program is asking for the payer EIN when if I enter 1099 for my wife. How will that be reconciled with the IRS, since they will get the 1099 with the full amount and my name only?
