Paid Cobra out of pocket

Yes, if you paid for Cobra premiums with after-tax dollars, then you can deduct on Schedule A if you itemize your deductions.

The total medical expenses will need to exceed 10% (7.5% for those born before 1/2/52) of your AGI to receive a benefit. You can always enter your medical expenses and TurboTax will determine if you meet the thresholds.

To enter in your return:

  • In your open return, select My Account
  • Tools
  • Topic Search
  • Type 'medical expenses, sch a' in the box, then select GO
