Our mortgage originated in November 2016. We didn't pay mortgage insurance premiums (unless you count PMI) or have outstanding principal as of 1/1/2016.

I assume you meant November of 2015.  PMI is mortgage insurance (Private Mortgage Insurance).  Outstanding principal is the amount you owe on your mortgage,  You have some if you have a mortgage, unless you happened to pay off the full balance you owe.

No. We closed November of 2016. Does that change your answer?

No, not really.  You would still have PMI from, closing and an outstanding balance on your mortgage.
