On the child and dependent care credit, my spouse and my name are showing and not our dependents so it's not allowing us to enter the information, Any help?

To enter the information for the Child and Dependent Care credit, please follow these steps:

1. Open or continue your return
2. In the search field, search for child care credit
3. Select the Jump to link to be taken to the section
4. Answer whether you lived in the United States for more than 6 months in 2021. You must answer Yes to claim the credit.
5.  If the next area does not yet have any names, it will ask Whose care did you pay for? If you or your spouse's name are in there, you will want to delete those and select your dependents from the drop-down menu then hit Continue.
6. Enter the amount you paid for that dependent. You will have to add each dependent individually. 
7. Once you have added all the dependents and the expenses you paid for each click Done.
8. Enter each Care Provider. For each care provider, you will need a Social Security Number or EIN as well as their name and address and amount paid. The total amounts paid to the care providers should match the total expenses for all dependents.

Hi, thanks for the response. My husband and my names appear once we get past verifying that we have lived in the US for 6 months but there isn't a way for us to remove our names and there is no drop down to select our children.

Did your child live in the US for more than 6 months?  Your child may not be a qualifying dependent because of how you answered one or more questions.  You can walk back through the Personal Info section to verify all the information on your child is correct.  

You will only be able to select a qualifying dependent on the drop down.

Yes, both of my children lived with us in US for more than 6 months. We have never lived anywhere else. There is no drop down screen at all. It's strange because it has the information stored from 2020 but won't let me put in the information for 2021.

Please go back to the "My Info" section (click on "My Info" on the left) and verify that your children are listed as dependents.

Please be aware that your children have to be under age 13  in 2021 to qualify. Please see Who is a Qualifying Person for the Child and Dependent Care Credit? 

If your children are over 13 or not entered as dependents then they won't show up in the drop-down menu.
