On my final tax filing it has that the home we sold at a loss was our main home. It was not. How do I change that?

What did you sell in 2019? Your primary residence? A 2nd home? Vacation home? Rental property? Raw land? Something else?

Where exactly in the program did you report the sale? Sale of home? Sale of business property? Investments section? Somewhere else?

Was the property at any time during your ownership used for "ANY" business purpose such as a rental property? Maybe you rented out a room? Maybe you claimed a home office for your business or employment in the past? Some other type of business use maybe?

It depends upon where you entered the information.

Try the following:

The input could be in the Federal section of the program as follows:

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down to see All Income
  3. Select Less Common Income
  4. Select Sale of Home

If you do not see your sale here, you can also check if it was the sale of a rental property by following the instructions on the link below and correcting your input here.

Reporting the sale of a rental property

It might also have been entered in the following section if you received a Form 1099-S.

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down through all income until you see Investment income
  3. Select Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other
  4. Your sale might be listed here.  You can edit here if needed.
