The input for the 2024 AGI and filing status will not open in TurboTax unless your 2025 income is the reason that you are not qualifying for the Form 8936 Clean Vehicle Credit.  So, if you do not have the option to enter that information but you still are not getting the credit, then there is most likely another reason.

On Form 8936 Clean Vehicle credits. I can't seem to get Part I line 3a to populated with my 2024 AGI.

In my case, my 2025 AGI is above the MFJ limit for the Previously Owned Clean Vehicle Credit, and my 2024 AGI is below the limit. So 2025 income is in fact the reason I don’t qualify under the current year test.

 

That’s why I expected TurboTax Online to open the prior year AGI input and populate Form 8936 Part I line 3a, but I’m not seeing that option in the interview.

 

Are there specific conditions or screens in the Used Clean Vehicle section that trigger the prior year income test?

No, there is nothing that you should be able to input differently to trigger the screen that would allow you to enter the 2024 AGI and filing status.

 

If you would be willing to share a diagnostic copy of your tax return then I can take a closer look to see if something else is causing the input to not be triggered.  The diagnostic file is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below.


TurboTax Online:

 

  • Sign in to your account and be sure you are in your tax return.
  • Select Tax Tools in the menu to the left.
  • Select Tools.
  • Select Share my file with agent.
  • A pop-up message will appear, select OK to send the sanitized diagnostic copy to us.
  • Post the token number here.

Hi @AnnetteB6 I have done what you suggested, as I had the same issue. Reading back on forums from 2024/2025 this is a common issue. My reference # is 1339277 for my file and I would appreciate your help, Thank you!

Hi eunseokwak, thanks for finding this thread. I was the one who started it. I’ve already spent two hours on the phone with TurboTax support across two separate calls and still haven’t found a solution. If you happen to find a workaround, please post it here. Much appreciated!

Thank you for sharing your token number and diagnostic file.  After taking a look at the tax return, I could not determine anything with regard to claiming the clean vehicle credit because there was no information entered about what vehicle was purchased.  Without that section being completed with your details and answers to the questions presented, I cannot determine what the problem may be or what the possible solution could be.  

 

Feel free to input that information and send another token number if you still need assistance.

Sorry about that. I just re-added my 8936 to try again and had no option to input my 2024 MAGI. My case is 1339364

@wenger317  I was on the phone yesterday for 30 minutes and the person kept telling me to go all the way to the end where you have to verify your 2024 AGI to file. I kept telling this person that it was not the correct answer but they had no other ideas. I really hope that TurboTax can find a solution as this looks like a long-running issue.
