New York State allows a union dues deduction beginning in 2018. Where do i enter this deduction?

The deduction for union dues will be entered on your itemized deductions on your federal return and will transfer over to your New York Form IT-196. New York is one of the states that will allow a taxpayer to itemize deductions even if they took the standard deduction on the federal return.

Follow the directions below if you need to enter your itemized deductions onto your federal return.

1. Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
2. Click Tax Tools from the left-side menu.
3. Select Tools from the drop down.
4. Click Topic search, type in Schedule A, and click Go.

If you have already entered your itemized deductions on the federal return, then type Form IT-196 into the search box, in the upper right corner of the screen, to see if your union dues have carried over to your New York return.
