My W-2 wages ~$95k. Made a $6,800 post-tax contribution to HSA. Expecting a refund of $1,496 in 22% tax bracket. Instead refund is $816 @ 12%. Help! What am I missing?

Here's the summary. My W-2 wages (block #1) were in the 22% tax bracket. I contributed $6,800 to my HSA from my bank a/c (post-tax). I see a $816 refund for the post-tax HSA contribution of $6,800 which uses a tax bracket of 12%. I was expecting a refund of $1,496 using the correct tax bracket of 22%. That's a difference of 10 percentage points or $680! Please help! What am I missing?

It depends. How much was your withholding from your W2? Also, did you have any other income and what was your standard or itemized deduction amount?

Standard deduction for married couples ($24,800). So I guess that brings my AGI down to ~$70k which would be in the 12% tax bracket. So, the refund might be correct!
