A child must be UNDER 17 to qualify for the Child Tax Credit.  As your son was 17 at the end of 2016, he does not qualify for this credit.

Although the child can still be a qualifying child dependent thru age 18 (23 if a full time student) and qualify you for the Earned Income Credit; he no longer qualifies you for the Child tax credit the year he turns 17. It doesn't matter if he turns 17 on Dec. 31. Remember, you got to claim the child tax credit the year he was born.

My son born in 1999 isn't getting a child tax credit

so I've been up to date with rescue relief funds. My son was born in 1999 and my daughter in 1993. At the time both my children were full time student's. I'm just getting back on my feet from being homeless. I was in the shelter system, unfortunately for 16 months due to COVID-19. Recently in November 2020 by the grace of God im in my place, I don't have ti say I lost everything I owned. With that said , due I qualify for child tax credit through the rescue relieve funds?

@jaxs1207 No.    Sorry.   Per the tax law in effect for 2020 you get child tax credit for a child who was YOUNGER than 17 at the end of 2020.   Both of your kids were older than 16 at the end of 2020 so you cannot get the child tax credit for either one of them.   You do not get the child tax credit for kids in their 20's even if you can claim them as a qualifying relative dependent.

We do not know from the information you entered if you are claiming either one as a dependent on your tax return.   If you can claim either one of them you can get the $500 credit for other dependents for the one(s) you can claim.   And if you are eligible for the 3rd stimulus check you can get that check for a dependent of any age if they are claimed on your 2020 return.

IRS interview to help determine who can be claimed:
