If his name is not on the house (only yours), he can't claim the tax deductions, even though he may have proof he paid them.
Since he's not obligated to pay the expenses, his doing so is essentially a 'gift' to you.
Only you can claim the tax deductions.

Correct. Only the person who actually paid the interest can take the deduction.
