My itemized deductions total$49831 yet TTax says, on the page headed "the standard deduction is right for you, that our itemized deductions are only 17196. Why?

1)  State&Local Income taxes + Property taxes are limited to $10,000  ..so reduce that part.
2)  Medical deductions are limited to only the out-of-pocket that exceeds 7.5% of your AGI....so reduce that.
3)   No un-reinbursed Employee expenses anymore if you are trying that....thsoe don't count at all.

Now see how close it is.

IF using Desktop software, you can force-up the Schedule A in Forms Mode and see what is actually on your Schedule A....and that could clear it up.

There are limits on deductions. For example SALT (State and Local Taxes) are limited to a total of $10K for the year.
