You sound iike you are filing a Married Joint return, in which case your standard deduction is $24,000, higher if one or both of you is over 65. Your itemized deductions would need to exceed that amount.
Lastly, itemized deductions can only be used to reduce your taxable income to zero. after that, you get no further deduction. You do not receive cash for your itemized deduction amount.
