My husband had to live in a personal care home. Publ. 502 the cost of the home is considered an approved Deduction. Turbo Tax has not allowed it...why not?

My husband had to live in a personal care home. Publ. 502 the cost of the home is considered an approved Deduction. Turbo Tax has not allowed it...why not?

This would only be deductible as an itemized deduction  under medical expenses.  You only receive a deduction for the amount of all your medical expenses over 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income.  in addition, medical is only one itemized deduction.  Before you ca itemize, the total of ALL your itemized deductions of all types has to exceed your Standard Deduction.  You sound iike you are filing a Married Joint return, in which case your standard deduction is $24,000, higher if one or both of you is over 65.  Your itemized deductions would need to exceed that amount.

Lastly, itemized deductions can only be used to reduce your taxable income to zero. after that, you get no further deduction.  You do not receive cash for your itemized deduction amount.
