My husband and I both are required to have a vehicle for work. Our work provides mileage reimbursement but does not cover the cost of other car expenses.

Can we still add this to our taxes for our other car expenses without including the mileage information

My husband and I both are required to have a vehicle for work. Our work provides mileage reimbursement but does not cover the cost of other car expenses.

If your employer is reimbursing you for work-related miles on your personal vehicle, the tax treatment depends on several factors.

Does your employer include the mileage reimbursement in your taxable pay?  If so, you can deduct the miles driven as a job-related expense along with your itemized deductions.  Turbo Tax will do the calculation for you.

If your employer reimburses you the IRS standard mileage rate of 54 cents per mile but does not include it in your pay, there is nothing to claim for tax purposes.

If your employer pays less than the 54 cent rate, you can enter your miles in the job-related expense section.  A follow-up question will ask if you were reimbursed for any of your mileage.  Enter the total your employer reimbursed you, and you will be able to deduct the difference.

Note: I have attached screenshots to the section where the employer reimbursement is entered in the 2016 program.  After you enter the miles driven for your job, there will be a few questions about other job-related expenses.  Look for the page titled Job-Related Expenses, with blocks to fill in for miscellaneous expenses.  (See the first screenshot)  The very next page will ask if you received reimbursements.  (See the second screenshot)  After responding "Yes", the following page will allow you to enter the reimbursement.  (See the third screenshot)
