While filing my 2016 taxes, I realized that I did NOT deduct $795 worth of origination charges (or points) for my mortgage when filing my 2015 taxes. I refinanced the mortgage from 2015 in 2016. Currently, I have an interest deduction for the original mortgage and the refinance. I also have deducted points for the refinance.

The points paid in 2015 must be used on that return. You can prepare an amended return for 2015 by using the information below. As example in the 15% tax bracket this would mean $119 reduction in tax and refund.
The IRS does not allow the e-file of an amended return so the link here will provide the mailing address for your area: Where to File Paper Returns With or Without a Payment

Usually if a federal return is amended, it's likely the state return will need to be amended. Not all states do have or include itemized deductions. To find the information and to obtain the mailing address for your area, select your state below.
