My daughter is starting college in august 2017. we had registration fees and housing deposits in 2016, can we deduct them?

My daughter is starting college in august 2017. we had registration fees and housing deposits in 2016, can we deduct them?
While qualified education expenses paid in 2016 for 2017 can be used for education credit, the expenses you post are not qualified expenses. Generally, tuition and books for American Opportunity Credit and tuition for Lifetime Learning Credit are qualified expenses.
