Mortgage interest and outstanding principal

We are filing MFS and will be splitting the mortgage interest deduction from BOX 1 on 1098.  Do we also need to split the reported Outstanding Mortgage Principal in BOX 2?

Mortgage interest and outstanding principal

Yes, if you’re splitting the mortgage interest deduction between two Married Filing Separately returns, you should split the mortgage balance shown in Box 2 the same way for consistency.
