Medical expenses i paid for my son who is not a dependent

My son is 28 in 2016 and was injured in a car accident in March.  He did not have insurance and had significant medical bills which I paid for.  Can I deduct the expenses and how?  If not can I add him as a dependent?  Thank you

Itemized Deductions. You may be able to deduct expenses you paid that year for medical and dental care for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents.

There is a handy interactive online tool on the IRS website which will help you determine whether or not you may claim your son as a dependent.  See the tool at:
