Married in 2021 Filled Seperate in 2020

My new wife and I filed separately for 2020. We didn't marry until Jan 2021.

I filed single, over 65 and Standard deduction.

She filed single and itemized.

In Jan 2021 we got married I retired and my income for 2021 was substantially less and I'm over 65.

We are trying to file Married\Jointly for the 2021 tax year and the section for determining if State tax refund federally taxable is very confusing because we filed so differently in 2020.  I thought i'd just combine but those numbers don't seem to match up.

Thoughts\Help  ??
Thx

Enter your wife's refund only. She itemized in 2020 so her refund is taxable. You don't enter your 1099-G state refund since you took the standard deduction and your refund is not taxable. If you've entered your 1099-G, please delete it.

To skip entering the information to see how much of the refunds are taxable, we know only your wife's refund is,  please see the information below.

  1. To quickly get to that section of TurboTax, type 1099-G in the search bar and select Jump to 1099-G.
  2. Continue with the onscreen interview until you get to the On the Let's See if Your 2020 XXX Refund is Taxable screen, select No, I'll skip this. Just make all of my 2020 XXX refund taxable.
  3. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete.

her state refund may not be taxable. there are many factors that could enter into the determination.

look at page 84 for instructions for determining the taxability of her refund
