Made pre-tax contributions to HSA by payroll deduct. W-2 did not include HSA contribution in box 12. Do I need to request corrected W-2? If not, how enter in TurboTax?

Checked help section but do not see anywhere in Turbotax to edit the HSA contribution amount that was not included by employer on W-2.  There was a line to add personal contributions that were made after-tax but mine were made pre-tax.

If your employer did not remove the HSA contributions (both theirs and yours by payroll deduction) from Wages in boxes 1, 3, and 5 (you will have to ask them because you can’t tell by looking at the W-2), then do the following:

  • Go back to the HSA interview (do a Search for hsa and click on the jump-to link)
  • Proceed to the screen with the heading “Let’s enter [name]’s HSA contributions”
  • Enter the HSA contributions on the second line

You would enter even your employer’s contributions (if any) as your personal contribution, because what this question about personal HSA contributions is really asking for is what is the amount of your after-tax HSA contributions. Since you now know that your employer did not remove the HSA contributions from Wages, these contributions are after-tax and belong on the second line.

If your employer, on the other hand, did remove the HSA contributions from Wages in boxes 1, 3, and 5, then do the following:

  • Go back to the HSA interview (do a Search for hsa and click on the jump-to link)
  • Proceed to the screen with the heading “Let’s enter [name]’s HSA contributions”
  • Enter nothing on this screen (it should be zeros or blank on both lines)
  • Continue to the next screen with the heading “Did your employer tell you about any other contributions?”
  • Click Yes. Three new lines will be exposed.
  • On the line with “Employer and payroll contributions not reported in box 12 of your W-2”, enter the amount of the HSA contributions (both your employer’s and yours by payroll deduction)
  • Finish the HSA interview
