line 28 child tax cred

In previous years using turbo tax i've always had an amount on line 28.  This year running through the program is says I have $XXXX in credit but then in the final forms it had line 28 blank and the $XXXX is not shown there and is not calculated in.

Is there a bug in the software?  how can I get intuit to correct this error?  According to turbo tax, i'm getting WAY less back this year because the software is not putting the child credit on line 28..

LOOK at line 19 ... did you use up the entire $2000 there ?   If so you have no credit left to become refundable on line 28.

The rules for the child tax credit have changed.  The maximum amount of the child tax credit is now $2000; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount is $1500.

In order to get the credit, you must have income from working.  The credit is calculated based on the amount you earned above $2500 multiplied by 15%.

 The guidelines are:

  • Be under age 17 at the end of the year.
  • Be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of one of these (for example, a grandchild, niece or nephew)
  • Provide no more than half of their own financial support during the year.
  • Have lived with you for more than half the year.
  • Be properly claimed as your dependent on your tax return.

You will get a non-refundable credit up to $2000 per child.  That means the credit cannot be more than your actual tax bill. However, if your child tax credit was limited by your tax bill you may be able to get the remainder up to $1500 as a refundable Additional Child Tax Credit.

One possibility is that your child turned 17 this year, so the child tax credit of $2,000 would be replaced by the lesser Other Dependent Credit of $500. The amout on line 28 would be the additional child tax credit, which may not apply to you if you have a child tax credit on line 19 of form 1040.
