So I have 2 children, which I declared last year. This year, me and their mother are claiming one child each, however I was paid in advance for both children on the CTC, and I split $3,300 with the mother.
Essentially, It appears I was paid $3,300, but actually I was paid half of that -since I gave her half since we are changing situations.
What do I enter in the column so that I don't get over taxed/or undertaxed?
$3,300 or $1,650?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The IRS has sent out 6419 letters to all taxpayers who have received the advance child tax credit.
You should report exactly the amount indicated on your 6419 letter even if you had split the money with the mother.
If you do not qualify for repayment protection, you may need to repay some of the advance.
Please read this IRS FAQ for more information.
your situation is unclear. if you and the kids lived with your mother for more than 1/2 the year and she provided over 1/2 the support for you and the kids and if you are under 19 (not a full time student) or under 24 (if you are) or if the age test is not met and your gross income is less than $4300 it may be her that should be claiming you and the kids. you would claim noone.
if you're living together for more than 6 months of 2021 and you supported yourself and the kids, then under the tie breaker rules only you, because you are the parent, can claim the kids - your mother can claim no one.
