Job related Mileage expense for self employed

As self employed you would enter your Business vehicle expenses on schedule C.

  1. Open your return
  2. Type Schedule C in the Search box.
  3. Select the Jump to link.
  4. Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? and answer the questions until you get the Select any expense categories you have screen.
  5. Select your expenses, then Continue.
    • If you've already worked in this section, select Edit or Review next to your business.
  6. Then select Start or Edit next to Business vehicle expense.

If you are using your car for both business and personal purposes, the expenses must be split. The deduction is based on the portion of mileage used for business.

You can use:

The actual expenses method which include:

  • Depreciation
  • Lease payments
  • Gas and oil
  • Tires
  • Repairs and tune-ups
  • Insurance
  • Registration fee

The standard mileage rate

  • Taxpayers who want to use the standard mileage rate for a car they own must choose to use this method in the first year the car is available for use in their business.
  • Taxpayers who want to use the standard mileage rate for a car they lease must use it for the entire lease period.
  • The standard mileage rates for 2023 is 65.5 cents/mile.

"turbo tax business"

If I understand the question, you don't claim mileage here.  Turbotax Business is a standalone program only available on a PC, for preparing  tax returns for S-corps, C-corps, and partnerships.  If you are driving your personal vehicle for one of these types of businesses, your personal mileage does not go anywhere on your business return.  It only goes on your personal tax return.

If you are an officer of an S- or C-corp, you must pay yourself a salary.  As a W-2 worker, you can't deduct mileage for using your personal vehicle for work.  The business could reimburse you tax-free for mileage if the  business has an accountable expense plan.  Then the mileage would be reported as a business expense.  If you have a partnership, the partnership could also reimburse you for personal mileage if the partnership has an accountable plan.  Or, you may be able to deduct your individual partnership expenses on your personal return after entering your K-1 statement (I'm not sure about this).

If you are a sole prop or single member LLC, and you have not made a special election to file as an S-corp, then you are a disregarded entity and should not be using Turbotax Business.  You should be reporting your business income and expenses on schedule C as part of your personal tax return using either Turbotax Premium (online) or Turbotax Home & Business (installed on your own computer).
