@goransonlexi do you have contributions to your HSA listed on Box 12 / Code W of your W-2?
if yes....there was a question later in the HSA section asking if you contributed money directly to your HSA. DO NOT include the dollars already indicated on your W-2 in your response. Is that the problem? (it's a common error).
Yes, I have money listed in box 12W of my W2. However, I just went back through the HSA portion of my filing and I can't find where it asks me about personal contributions outside of W2 contributions. Any guidance there?
Yes, on the page titled Let's enter (your name) HSA contributions. There are two fields per taxpayer screen. The first box is what transferred from your W-2, the second box is for additional contributions. Why am I showing an excess HSA contribution?
Hi, there's nowhere on here that I see the page that you showed. On the left, under Federal I see:
Income
Deductions and Credits
Other Tax Situations
Federal Review
If I go to HSA and MSA contributions, it takes me through a series of questions, I submit my 1099-SA. I continue through the questions and it shows I have excess contributions still
Please note that your HSA custodian cannot know if you made excess contributions. All they know are the maximum HSA contribution limits, not your HSA contribution limit. To know if you made excess contributions, they would have to know a lot of your private tax tax information, which I am sure that they don't.
OK, since we cannot see your private tax data, let me ask you some questions:
1. what type of HDHP coverage did you have in 2025? (Family or Self)?
2. which months did you have it?
3. what was the amount of contributions through your employer (code W in box 12 on your W-2)?
4. what was the amount of contributions that you made directly to the HSA (not through the employer)?
5. did you have a carryover of excess HSA contributions from 2024?
6. what was the amount of excess that TurboTax told you about?
7. can you be claimed as a dependent (it does not matter if you actually are, just that you can be)?
The 1099-SA has nothing to do with you having excess contributions.
1. what type of HDHP coverage did you have in 2025? (Family or Self)? SELF
2. which months did you have it? JAN-DEC
3. what was the amount of contributions through your employer (code W in box 12 on your W-2)? $4060
4. what was the amount of contributions that you made directly to the HSA (not through the employer)? $240
5. did you have a carryover of excess HSA contributions from 2024? NO
6. what was the amount of excess that TurboTax told you about? $1,560
7. can you be claimed as a dependent (it does not matter if you actually are, just that you can be)? NO
Normally, I can tell within seconds what was miss-entered, but i can't here. The excess of $1,560 just does not jump out at me. As I can tell from your "personal" contribution, you knew exactly what your annual HSA contribution limit was, and you contributed right up to it.
So we can go back and forth until all your hair comes out, or we can make the assumption that you have a "stuck" number. That is, sometimes TurboTax calculates a value, and keeps that value even when you go back through the interview during which you might have expected this value to change. The value of the excess to be withdrawn by the due date is a popular one - if you generate this value on one run, and the next run you don't have an excess at all, the value of the amount withdrawn does not get updated which causes all sorts of problems (like excess contributions).
The only way to get rid of these stuck values (since it is difficult or even impossible through the interview) is to do an HSA Reset. This will remove all your HSA data, which will allow you to start over.
HSA RESET
***Reset***
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)
*** Desktop/Windows***
3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and
4. Select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.
*** Desktop/Mac***
3. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon.
4. From the menu, select the form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)) you want to remove (if you don't see it, select Open Form at the top). From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....
