Your 1040 should update
“The new "up to $300 above the line cash charity donation" is available for tax year 2020. This allows a Taxpayer to claim up to a $300 credit which is subtracted from income on the 1040 line 10c if the Taxpayer is claiming the Standard Deduction. (If you Itemize Deductions, all your donations will be listed on Schedule A.) “
Thanks for your reply.
I tried your suggestion for TurboTax Online, but I still need help.
After clicking GO on standard deduct & exempt, the next screen does not give me an option to select between standard and itemized. I get a different screen - "Great, we're all done with tax breaks". When I click continue on that screen, then I get the Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act screen. My screen includes only a box to enter the amount and doesn't refer to either standard or itemized.
| 1040/1040SR Wks: Cash Charitable is too large. |
| Cash Charitable |
Perhaps you don't have a choice of Standard or Itemized because you didn't enter any Schedule A type Deductions & Credits.
If this is the case, please go back under Deductions & Credits and enter 300 as a cash charity contribution.
Please then repeat the steps I sent earlier.
be sure to only enter 300
no decimals
So, even though I'm not itemizing, I still need to go in and open a Sch A?
If that's the case, why doesn't Turbotax take me there?
Do I have to go and manually find and add Sch A to my return?
I need to know what line needs to be completed on Sch A to complete this requirement.
This is still an open issue for me.
Thank you.
I suspect that a Charitable Cash Contribution under CARES Act is confusing the standard deduction / itemized deduction calculations.
If you are in TurboTax Online, the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act appears as the end of Deductions & Credits. First you have to pass the screen Based on what you told us, the standard deduction is best for you at the end of Deductions & Credits.
But you have to qualify for the standard deduction before the screen appears. So you may want to change the value of one or more itemized deductions to $1 so that you qualify for the standard deduction.
Follow these steps:

I have resolved my issue. I went into Sch A. There was some errant info in the charitable deductions area. I deleted that information and then was able to proceed without any problem.
This topic has already been addressed in the turbo community. Sorry - I don't recall the name of the post but it was about the $300 charity deduction.
Thanks.
