Is there a bug when calculating the HSA max contribution limit? I'm entering self only coverage for 4 months and it appears to use the family plan amount

Checking "self-only" for August through November and "none" for the others and I'm getting a max contribution limit of $2250 when it should be $1133.

Unless it's because the rest of my family is also on a separate HDHP plan during that time as well.

The IRS states that if one spouse has Family HDHP coverage, then both spouses are assumed (for purposes of the contribution limit) that they have Family coverage. I am assuming that your spouse has Family coverage on her HDHP.

Note that this number is the "limit" for you. But as a family, your maximum limit is $6,750, meaning that the sum of your contributions to both HSAs can't be more than $6,750 (assuming that your spouse was in her Family coverage on December 1, 2017).

My spouse's HDHP is only covering herself while my HDHP is covering myself and my children. So it sounds like my family HDHP coverage is what is promoting her to have the family contribution limit. Thank you for the answer!

Instructions Form 8889.

"Complete lines 1 through 13 as instructed on the form. However, if you, and your spouse if filing jointly, are both eligible individuals and either of you has an HDHP with family coverage, you both are treated as having only the family coverage plan. Disregard any plans with self-only coverage."
