A medical facility fee or expense includes hospital fees, rehabilitation facility fees, outpatient facility expenses, etc. Any of these fees as well as MRI and Radiology tests are deductible medical expenses.

If you have additional questions or details regarding this, please feel free to post in the comments for further clarification.

This is a great question about medical billing terminology, and I understand you're looking for clarity.

No, an MRI or radiology test is not the same as claiming a medical facility expense. There's an important distinction here:

  • A radiology test (like an MRI, CT scan, X-ray) refers to a specific diagnostic procedure that was performed. This would appear as its own line item on a medical bill or insurance claim with its own specific billing code.

  • A medical facility expense (sometimes called a facility fee) refers to the overhead costs of using the hospital, imaging center, or clinic where you received care. This typically covers things like the building, equipment, administrative staff, and other operational expenses.

When you have an MRI, you'll typically see at least two charges:

  1. The technical component (the actual scan and equipment usage)
  2. The professional component (the radiologist's interpretation)

And sometimes a separate facility fee depending on where the scan was performed.

I understand billing questions can be frustrating and confusing. If you'd like to speak with someone directly about a specific bill or insurance claim, I'd recommend:

  • Calling the billing department of the medical facility where you received care
  • Contacting your insurance company's customer service line
  • Speaking with a patient advocate if your healthcare system offers this service

They can provide specific information about your charges and explain exactly what you're being billed for.
