IRS site still mentions home office for "convenience of employer" as deductible. Is there a way to do this in TurboTax because my home office is essential to my job?

TurboTax and other sites talk about the new law that makes all job-related expenses as non-deductible for W2 employees.  However, the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/home-office-deduction still talks about being able to deduct due to "convenience of your employer":

"Additional tests for employee use. If you are an employee and you use a part of your home for business, you may qualify for a deduction for its business use. You must meet the tests discussed above plus:

  • Your business use must be for the convenience of your employer.
  • You must not rent any part of your home to your employer and use the rented portion to perform services as an employee for that employer.

If the use of the home office is merely appropriate and helpful, you cannot deduct expenses for the business use of your home."

My home office is absolutely essential to my job.  Please clarify this and tell me how I can apply this in TurboTax.

The link you provided refers to 2013/2014.

Under the new tax laws for 2018-2025, all W2 employee business deductions are suspended unless you fall into 1 of 4 categories (Military, Qualifying performing Artists, Fee basis state or local government officials, and employees with impairment-related work expenses).

If you are self-employed, receive a 1099 or are a statutory employee, then you can take the deductions.

"You can no longer claim any miscellaneous itemized deductions that are subject to the 2% of adjusted gross income limitation, including unreimbursed employee expenses. However, you may be able to deduct certain unreimbursed employee business expenses if you fall into one of the following categories of employment listed under Unreimbursed Employee Expenses , next, or are an eligible educator as defined under Educator Expenses , later." https://www.irs.gov/publications/p529#en_US_2018_publink100012457

Actually, the bottom of the link says "Page Last Reviewed or Updated: 16-Jan-2020." It is very confusing.
