In order to claim the tax credit for renewable energy, do the solar panels need to be professionally installed or can the home owner do it himself?

According to Energy.gov you can claim the tax credit for self-installed solar panels.  Per the information listed on the site: " Be aware that you can install the products above yourself, but you cannot claim labor and installation costs if you do so."
