If you filed 2021 with TurboTax, you can amend your return to add that additional information.
This TurboTax Help article has step-by-step instructions.
You will need to be sure you have completed the personal information at the beginning of the return, to qualify the dependent as eligible for the credit. Then, enter all of the income (for both spouses if married filing jointly).
When you return to the Dependent Care section, in Deductions and Credits, you should see a dropdown box to select the dependent. Then you should see prompts to enter expenses.
Thanks for the response! We, however, originally included him in our 2021 return w/ TurboTax, and received the proper quoted return. But, when we actually got our return, it did not include it…how do I amend this?
You said 2021? Not the current year 2022?
If the IRS changes your return, you can’t just amend. They rejected your claim once and they will reject it again unless you correct whatever they objected to.
You said “child care credit”. Is that what you meant, the credit for day care expenses so you and your spouse could work? Or did you mean the Child Tax Credit, which was up to $3600 for newborns in 2021 and up to $2000 for 2022.
If the child credit, did your child have a social security number? If the dependent care credit, did you (and your spouse if married) both have income from working? Did you include the tax number of the care provider?
Yes, my apologies, I meant the the Child Tax Credit of 2021. We selected it in preparing our return, included his ssn, and TurboTax included the estimate for his credit. However, the IRS rejected it (although we double checked, including on the IRS site, it had never been issued for him). How does this get corrected?
