If I work in HI for 6/21 - 6/22 temporarily. Home/drivers license/car registered, in OR (intention to return). What state do I claim as residency? Do I have an option?

As you enter your personal information in the program, it will ask where you lived during the tax year and what dates you lived there.  The program will determine your residency status for tax filing purposes.

However...

You're a full-year resident and will use Form OR-40 if all of the following are true:

  • You think of Oregon as your permanent home.
  • Oregon is the center of your financial, social, and family life.
  • Oregon is the place you plan on coming back to when you're away.

You're still a full-year resident if you temporarily move out of Oregon, and then move back.

For additional information:  State of Oregon.gov Individuals: What form do I use?

A Hawaii nonresident is an individual who is in Hawaii for a temporary or transient purpose, and whose permanent domicile is not Hawaii. A nonresident must fi le an Individual Income Tax Return—Nonresident and Part-Year Resident (Form N-15), if required to do so. A nonresident will be taxed on income from Hawaii sources only.
