If I put in an additional $4,000 into my HSA, not by my employer, but after taxes, is there somewhere I should report this? Will this even impact my refund?

Yes, as long as you have not exceeded your Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution limit for the year, an additional after-tax contribution can impact your refund.  It provides an additional deduction which reduces your taxable income.

You would enter this additional contribution in the Deductions and Credits > Medical > 1099-SA, HSA, MSA section of your return.  Look for a question about making HSA contributions.  Any amounts reported on your W-2 and made through payroll contributions will be shown on the screen along with a place to enter any additional contributions that you made outside of payroll contributions.

You can enter the amount you intend to contribute just to see if it impacts your return.  Then decide whether you do want to make the contribution.  You have until the due date of the tax return to actually make the HSA contribution and designate it for the 2025 tax year instead of 2026.

Since none of the suggestions offered have worked, and you have already tried basic troubleshooting steps, I suggest that you could clear the return and start over in TurboTax Online if that works for you. See here for instructions.

You can erase your return and start over as long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered your product.

If you'd rather try to have a live session with TurboTax Support, see here for details.

If you have already submitted payment, the other option as a last resort would be to request a refund.  See this help article for details.

Unfortunately, the software is not allowing it. I've tried several times and contacted the company to no avail. The system says that there is an option, but it doesn't work.

The part in TurboTax , where you will enter additional contributions, is after you enter your 1099-SA to report your distributions.  To get there:

  • Navigate to the 1099-SA section:
  • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to the 1099-SA screen under Wages & Income.
  • TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-SA.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions.

What is a health savings account (HSA)?

What's Form 8889?

Thank you for your response, unfortunately the software is not loading that form for me. I called in and shared my screen and the two couldn't get it to load either. We tried deleting my 1099 and rentering it and it still would not load. The rep stayed here would escalate, but I've heard nothing back from anyone about it.

Since you mentioned a 1099:  Are you talking about entering a 1099-SA form for distributions that you took from your HSA?  That question would show up about entering that form right after you entered that you had an HSA.

The next page should be where you would enter your HSA contributions (as illustrated in the previous post) that you personally made to your account (and not the funds that were contributed through payroll deduction - those were entered on your W-2)

Unfortunately, the page is not showing up. I've tried multiple times.  Even with an employee cobrowsing, and he couldn't get it to populate either.

Step through the HSA section again and after the 1099-SA summary, you should get the screen asking about additional contributions.  If you're using TurboTax Online, close the program, and clear your Cache and Cookies first.  It seems the program is accessing old links for you.

That was a great thought, unfortunately it didn't work. I tried downloading the Android app and it doesn't show up through the app either.

If you select 'Revisit' at the beginning of the HSA section, select HSA for 'what type of plan?' You will then be asked if you received a 1099-SA.  If you did, you'll enter the info, verify address, and are asked if you used it for medical expenses.  If you didn't (or you already entered the info), the next screen should be a 1099-SA Summary.  The very next screen will be the screen to enter your personal HSA contributions.

If you're not getting these screens and you've already cleared your cache/cookies, delete the Form 8889 from your return and step through the section again.

I've deleted it 3 times and then entered it again. That screen is not showing up. I had a rep cobrowse with me and he couldn't get it to work with the workarounds either.

This screen is showing up for me as well as for all of the other experts.  This is not a system-wide issue.   At this point I would suggest that you try clearing your cache and cookies and then - if that doesn't help - trying a different computer to do your tax return.

Here's how to clear your cache.

Thank you for your response. I've cleared my cache, cleared my cookies, tried the phone app, tried a totally different computer and nothing is working. I've never had this problem before. There has to be something that can be done. I am computer literate. Please advise.

I'm excited to say, erasing the whole return and starting over worked. It made quite a difference in my return. Thank you for the suggestion and instructions on how to start over.
